Bob and Linda Combe

1942 GMC flatbed dualie. Bob found the truck in a field outside of Boise, Idaho with weeds growing around it, lots of body rust, and needing lots of bodywork. He took the truck apart down to the frame and sent the cab, fenders, etc. out for the needed bodywork and paint. Any places where metal was badly bent or rusted, it was cut out and metal patches were welded in. Bob said “no bondo”. The chrome is all original, refurbished of course. The upholstery is nicely done in black and, in keeping with the all original theme, was kept simple. Bob was meticulous in keeping the rebuild exactly like the original, including finding the molds for the original tires and having duplicates made for the restoration. One of the outstanding appearance features of the truck is the wood work that was done for the bed and the side rails, all hand crafted by Bob. Although a workhorse in its day, it is doubtful this beautiful truck is ever going to haul hay or farm implements again. The original 228 ci OHV engine was rebuilt, the electrical system has the rebuilt original generator and new wiring, but like the original, it remains a 6-volt system. When Bob and Linda took the truck to their very first car show in Solvang, they won Best of Class. This truck is unique with the all original look and meticulous attention to detail.

Carl and Lillian Conklin

Doc Conroy

1956 Chevrolet Bel-Air.   This car is one beautiful ride, but that was not always the case. Doc bought the car in the mid 80’s for $1,500 and it had issues, such as rusted body parts, a fender that was bulging out about 6”, and many more things. The car sat in storage for many years before he could get to work on it. When he did, he worked on it like a mad scientist and after 33 months and some $50,000-$60,000 it was done as the classic beauty it is today. With a full body off restoration, Doc has tubbed the car, modified the frame, built numerous specialized parts, put Glide bucket seats in the rear to look like Corvette seats, and redesigned Ford Taurus seats for the front. It is powered by a 365 Chevy Engine, 5 Speed Richmond manual transmission, and 9” Ford Lincoln rear end. The tan interior, gorgeous red paint, and American wheels make this car a true show stopper. This car was featured in Hot Rod Magazine’s July 2002 issue and has been featured on IN-N-OUT t-shirts.

Bob and Joan Cornelius

1957 Ford Fairlane 500.  Absolutely stunning, with so much attention applied to every detail; body work, paint, trim, engine, upholstery, 4-wheel disc brakes, etc.  But, that was not always the case. Bob bought the car on line in 2002 from a dealer in Denton, Texas, sight unseen. He says it was a rookie mistake and he made the best of it. The body work included replacing various panels on the car and, with much labor and money spent, it was completed to its current state in 2015 (he says it’s never finished). It is powered by a 2002 Ford Cobra 4.6L supercharged 32 valve V8 with a 6 speed Tremic trans & 9” Ford 4:10 positraction rear end. The Volvo Passionate Red paint & black leather interior make the car a truly beautiful ride. The car, with its 400 HP and good looks is something to see and drive.

Daniel and Roni Diaz

1928 Ford Tudor Sedan hot rod.  350 C.i. Chevy engine, 350 Chevy transmission, Chevy rear end, painted steel rims, gray primer and graphics, upholstery black and white tuck and roll.   Daniel was actually looking for a 49, 50, or 51 Ford Shoe Box when he found this 28 Ford and he liked it so he bought it. Daniel would like to pay tribute to Peter Fiorito Jr. the original builder of the car. Peter was quite well known in the hot rod world. He was involved in the informal gathering of the “Doughnut Derelicts” of Huntington Beach Calif. and started a similar group in Las Vegas called the “Doughnut Delinquents”. He also was the founder of “The Road Masters” car club of Las Vegas, Nevada. Daniel had a problem; his car and other cars that Peter built were quite unique and would be recognized so Daniel repainted his car with the grey primer and graphics and created his own identity. Graphics are the Flying Tigers of years past in World War Two, and Daniel’s graphics are a replica of the original ones.  He took a picture of a picture of a P-40 Mustang fighter plane and had a photographer print a copy to the exact size of the space he had on his car which he used for a templet. The car has been chopped 3 1/5” inches, body channeled, and the 32-grille shell was copped 1 7/8”. This old-style cool ride gets lots of looks and is fun to drive.

Art Fisher

1975 Plymouth Duster.  This car started out as a stock 6 cylinder “mom grocery getter.”  Although it can still get the groceries, it can get to the store and back a lot faster with the “few” improvements that have been made to it.  First, the slant 6 was replaced by a 360 cu in engine, and an Edelbrock performance package was added along with a high-capacity radiator to cool the bigger engine.  The exhaust flows through Harold Headers into flow master mufflers. The transmission is performance modified with a Hurst floor mounted torque flite shifter kit.  The rear suspension is a Mopar 8 ¼ rear end on leaf performance springs. Wheels are Mopar all chrome Rallye wheels with the front carrying BF Goodrich P215x70R14 and the rear P2x60x15. To stop the car, the front brakes have been converted to disk, with drums on the rear, and all four being boosted.  Steering for the car has been upgraded to power. The body is repainted to its original color, sienna metallic with Cuda style billboards side striping and a dual snorkel hood scoop has been added to the black matte painted hood. Front and rear bumpers have been moved 2 inches closer to the body which enhances the look and the taillight lenses have been modified. The interior is done in black with the Duster logo on the doors.  The front bucket seats are from an unknown source and Art says they’re comfortable, so they stayed.  The rest of the interior is restored to stock. All in all, the car is very nicely done.

1957 Ford Custom 300

Gene Hopcus

1932 Ford 3 Window Coupe.   Have you ever heard the song the beach Boys sang, “Little Deuce Coupe”? Well here is the car they were singing about!  Only, this one does not have a “flathead mill, lake pipes, or four on the floor”.  What it does have is a totally chromed out 350 mill, Magnaflow Exhaust System, a smooth Chevy 350 tranny, leather interior with a very comfortable Glide bench seat, really cool air conditioning, all wrapped up in gorgeous black body with pinstriping to match the color of the upholstery, louvered trunk, don’t forget that iconic Gene Hopcus 32 grill, and “he’s got the pink slip daddy”. Sorry about the picture.  It was taken in a hangar at Chino Airport and the lights reflected off Gene’s highly polished car.

John and Dee Dee Hussey

1965 PHS Documented GTO.  PPG Torch Red paint with period correct custom interior upholstery.  In 2017, after much encouragement from T.J. Santarelli, to buy a car and join the club, John went to the Barrett Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona to buy a Pontiac GTO. You see, he had wanted one since he was 15 years old. When he arrived he found that no GTO’s were on the auction list of cars. As he walked around, he found a late entry that was not on the list; a 1965 GTO. Well the rest is history; he bid on it and got his dream car. While it is a genuine GTO, the original drive train is long gone. The 389ci V8 was replaced with a 1970 Pontiac 400ci V8. The 2 speed syncromesh trans was replaced with a 1967 Pontiac Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 3 speed transmission with a Hurst Dual Gate Shifter. John then added a Gear Vender under/overdrive to give the car a comfortable highway cruising speed. The original rear end was replaced with a 1973 Pontiac Firebird 3.55 with posi-traction. This car, with the upgraded power disc brakes, power steering, cooling system, sound system, and cold Vintage air conditioning makes it a pleasure to drive. Of course, this was goal of John; he wanted a car that would please both of them, especially on the long drives to the out-of-area shows.

Terry and Dolores Lowe

1936 Nash Lafayette.  The LaFayette Motors Corporation started building cars in 1920. It was the very first car to have an electric clock. In 1921 Charles W. Nash became president of LaFayette Motors. Nash was already president of Nash Motors. The two brands remained separate companies, although Nash Motors was the principal LaFayette Motors stock holder. In 1924, Nash Motors retired the LaFayette name. In 1934 Nash re-introduced the LaFayette and built cars as LaFayette by Nash. After 1936 the cars were known as the Nash LaFayette 400. This all adds up to the fact that Terry’s car is the last LaFayette. Terry bought the car out of Michigan and, with help from Mark Bower, got it running in 2015. It is powered by a 350 Chevy, 700 R4 Trans & a 10 Bolt Rear End. A Mustang II Front Clip with T Bird Components make for a smooth ride. Original 318 ci Engine Restored Engine Compartment Restored Trunk.  This car has been in their family since it came off the dealership floor 46 years ago. He restored the trunk, replaced the gas tank, replaced the exhaust system, repainted the car with original “Dover White” and two coats of lacquer. He replaced the black vinyl top, re-upholstered the seats, replaced the head liner, replaced the carpeting and insulation, replaced the head lights/tail lights/side lights, and did a bunch of re-chroming. In the process of this re-work most of the parts were factory OEM and everything was done to match the original car.

Bob and Carrie O'Neal

1948 Reo Speed Wagon in Rustic Patina, Chevy 350 C.I. engine, 700 R4 Trans, Ford 9" rear end, wire front & 12x16 cheater slicks back wheels. This rare Rat Rod (Latin: ratatouiee rodius) is really a fun vehicle to drive. Bob says he gets all kinds of looks when he takes it out and all kinds of questions as to “what is it?”. Bob got the cab and hood in Las Vegas, got a frame from So-Cal, and built the car in his garage. He made the truck bed out of heavy steel c-channel for weight to help keep it on the ground...it was a little squirrely without that steel. He has taken the car to the drags and turned 88MPH in the 1/4 mile with an ET of 16.54. He didn’t need a parachute to slow down because of the Corvette disk brakes he put on the truck. The name on the door has meaning...his initials are REO, his son’s initials are REO, his grandson’s initials are REO, and his company’s name is (you guessed it) REO. Furthermore, the VIN# on the vehicle is R1O111 which represents the three of them. The cowhide seats are another special feature. The hide was purchased in Texas. After going through some 300 hides, Bob settled on the color perfectly matched to the patina of the truck.

Rich Ralstin

1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS.    The car was originally a six cylinder and there were only 8,224 of them made as Malibu SS 2-Door Sport Coupes compared to 57,445 of them made with V-8 engines. With its 454 c.i. engine, 700 R4 Trans, and Ford 9” rear end, it will get down the road. The Red Factory Replacement upholstery really sets the look for the white and fana beige paint job. Other comforts include Vintage AC, intermittent windshield wipers, power steering and power brakes.

Larry and Gwin Ramoneda

1954 Nash Metropolitan in teal & white, matching tuck & roll. Engine is a 1979 Datsun B-210, Transmission is a Datsun automatic, Stock rear end & wheels.  This car is just one of the collection of fine cars owned by Larry and Gwin.  Larry always liked the Metropolitan and when he found one for sale in La Habra, he swooped it up and made it the beauty it is today. He completely stripped and blasted the car, repaired the metal, painted it, upholstered it, new top, lots of new chrome trim, and put in the Datsun motor and trans. Larry said he was quite pleased with the way the new engine and trans fit, like it was made for it and it almost doubled the horsepower. The Metropolitan was designed as a second car to run around town, to the store, or maybe to the train station to commute to work. The design must have been good as they sold 94,986 over a 10-year period for the nation’s first compact car. It was this nation’s car. It was conceived and designed by Nash-Kelvinator for the USA, but it was built by Austin Motor Company in Longbridge, England. Larry and Gwin's car was chosen to parade down the drag strip in Pomona at the NHRA Drags.

Beautiful bright red 1932 Hi-Boy Roadster. The Wescott body has a metal hood and side panels, a Don Fink billet grill, and sits on a TCI custom frame. Interestingly, it’s a Ford-powered Ford. The 302 Ford Engine is topped by a B & M mini-blower, followed by an automatic transmission, then on to a 9” Ford rear end with disc brakes. Up front is a Kugel independent front end with disc brakes. Wheels: Billett Specialty w/Knockoffs. Smoothing out the ride are coil-over gas shocks. The bright red paint is accentuated by the removable black top and two tone gray leather upholstery.  License plate reads “RODESTR”.

1965 Chevy Nova SS.  Engine: 350 Chevy w/Edelbrock Aluminum Heads, Crane Cam Transmission: 200 R4 Overdrive, Color: Blazing Blue by Detroit Autobody, Suspension: TCI Pro Touring, Upholstery: Light Metallic Blue, Rear End: 9” Ford, 3:70 Gears, Posi Wheels: Billet Specialty Rims.   Remember the phrase "basket case"? This car was definitely that. No engine, no seats, and the chrome trim was missing. That is what Bruce started with. With the help of his brother-in-law, Rich Ralstin (who by the way built the engine for Bruce) they were able to put together one of the most beautiful Nova’s around. Every detail is on the money. All the work was done by them except for the paint and upholstery. This is definitely a home built car.

Bill and Linda Seal

1923 Ford "T Bucket". Bill started this project in 1995 and finished in 2000. The power for the car comes from a V-8 60 engine with twin carbs, aluminium heads and a mild cam. The trans is a 5 speed Toyota and the rear end is a S10. The car is painted black with brown upholstery with Indy style mag wheels. The chassis was built by Bill, along with the suspension and the exhaust system. Wilwood brakes stop the car with all the adapters also built by Bill. The gas tank is an Acme beer keg. Bill even built the brass radiator shell which nicely accents the black paint. The trailer Bill built follows the car everywhere and carries camping and wet-weather gear because this car gets driven! Since its completion in 2000, Bill and Linda have put over 95,000 miles on the car, mostly on back roads where they prefer scenery to freeways. Its been up and down the western states...California, Oregon and Washington, in all kinds of weather, including rain, heat and an occasional snow. Sometimes their trips take them 2-2 ½ months. They camp in national parks, but occasionally stay in motels. Like the popular song of the late 50’s, this bucket does have a hole in it and since it doesn’t have a top.  Bill put several holes in the floor to let the rain out.

Clyde Searcey

1936 ford roadster.  The car is totally stock: Stock 21 Stud Flathead V8 Engine, Stock 3 Speed Floor Shift Trans, Stock 411 Rear End, Stock Suspension, Stock Mechanical Brakes, and Stock 16” Spider Rims. It also has a very cool Rumble Seat. The White Vinyl Top, Cordovan Tan Paint, and Brown Naugahyde Interior make it a beautiful looking car. The 36 was originally restored in 1970. Clyde also has the original license plates which he obtained from his Grandfather. When you see this car you kind of step back in time. It reminds you of an old black and white movie with the car just tooling down the highway. This is a beautiful old car.

Chuck and Susan Stiles

1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray in blue.  Engine is Stock 327, Transmission is 4 speed.  Upholstery is original stock black leather,  distinctive tapering deck and a split rear window. Independent rear suspension. The ’63 is considered the most significant Corvette model year.  This beautiful car was the first corvette “sting ray” coupe and it featured a distinctive tapering deck and a split rear window.  The split rear window was unique to the ’63 and was eliminated the following year.  The tapering deck feature later appeared on the 1971 “Boattail” Buick Riviera.  Along with the distinctive “sting ray” styling, the ’63 Corvette introduced an independent rear suspension which greatly enhanced the ride and handling of the car.  It wasn’t until 29 years later that Chrysler began installing them on the 1991 Viper.  The only other car on the road at that time with an independent suspension was the Jaguar.  Chevrolet only built 10,400 of the ’63’ sting rays. This car is totally stock and all original. Chuck has many more finished and unfinished cars in his warehouse, but Susan says the ’63 is their pride and joy. She also mentioned that Chuck has enough cars.  (Do you ever have enough cars?) This Corvette is an excellent example of the group of fine cars in CAL-RODS.
