JULY 2026 - CAR OF THE MONTH STORY – TOM AND MARILYN BRUNER'S 1940 FORD STANDARD OPERA COUPE / BUSINESS COUPE

Sometimes finding the right car takes patience, and sometimes it takes knowing the right people. After many years of enjoying their well-known 1934 Ford, Tom and Marilyn Bruner decided it was time for a change. Once the ’34 was sold, Tom began searching for the next addition to the garage. His interests covered a wide range of possibilities—muscle cars, Tri-Fives, shoebox Fords, and more. The only requirement? It had to have a trunk!

The search took an interesting turn after a conversation with fellow CAL-ROD Joe Rode, who mentioned that Judy Conners was thinking about selling her beautiful 1940 Ford Standard Opera Coupe. Tom took a look, liked what he saw, and before long the deal was done.

This sleek black ’40 Ford checked all the boxes. Under the hood is a dependable 350 Chevrolet engine backed by a 200R automatic transmission and a Ford 9-inch rear end. A dropped front axle gives the car the perfect hot rod stance, while steel wheels with chrome caps maintain its classic appearance. With power steering, air conditioning, and a comfortable interior with correct grey mohair the car is as enjoyable to drive as it is to admire.

One of the things Tom appreciated most was that this Ford was built to be driven. It had already established an impressive travel history under Judy’s ownership, making trips to Yellowstone, Pleasanton, Bishop, and many other destinations. This is definitely not a trailer queen—it’s a road car through and through.

Since taking ownership, Tom and Marilyn have continued that tradition. In a relatively short time, they’ve put plenty of miles on the Ford, including a trip to the Dr. George Car Show in Indian Wells, along with numerous local events. Knowing Tom and Marilyn, there are many more adventures ahead.

What makes this car especially noteworthy is that it remains exactly what a hot rod should be: a beautiful, reliable car that gets driven and enjoyed. We’re pleased that this outstanding 1940 Ford continues to represent the spirit of CAL-RODS and remains on the club’s list of fine cars.

Congratulations to Tom and Marilyn Bruner and their beautiful 1940 Ford Standard Opera Coupe/Business Coupe, our July 2026 Car of the Month! 🚗🏆
