CAL-RODS FEATURED CAR FOR FEBRUARY 2026
Written by Sheree Driscoll
OWNER: BOB O'Neil A Little Red Rambler With a Lot to Say Meet the 1959 Rambler Wagon that proves you don’t need chrome fins tall enough to slice the air to make an impression. With its bright red paint and matching original red interior, this wagon has learned that being coordinated counts — especially on show day. Originally discovered on Facebook Marketplace—proof that the modern world still occasionally delivers miracles—it didn’t arrive in Bob’s driveway as-is. It arrived as a project. A good old-fashioned “built, not bought” situation. Under the hood sits a flat head 6, and for anyone who suspected the column shifter was dead, this Rambler proudly clicks through gears with a “3 on the tree.” Out back, a Ford 9-inch axle finishes off the drivetrain like a wink from a hot rodder who knows what’s up. Rolling on American wheels and restored for show and weekend fun, the Rambler has already seen some adventure — including trips to the beach. And while Bob’s only owned it for about two years, it’s already earned its place in weekend schedules, show entry forms, and casual driveway admiration selfies. When asked if he owns any similar cars, the answer was a quick “NO,” which is fair. This Rambler doesn’t seem like the type that shares the spotlight easily anyway. And for the record, if you’ve ever wondered if there’s an “O’Neil’s Surf Shop” somewhere out there connected to the car, the official statement from the owner is emphatic: “NO there is NO O’NEAL’S Surf Shop.” Apparently the internet had questions. Unique, bright, beach-ready, and proudly hand-built — this Rambler is living proof that the stories we make with our cars aren’t bought. They’re built, just like the wagon itself. |
